Welding is a profession fraught with risks. A welding professional is daily exposed to serious risk of injury because of the extreme heat and light produced during the welding process and must take enough precautions and use protective gear to ensure that the welding job doesn’t pose any danger to him.

One of the most essential and frequently used protective gears by the welding professionals is the welding helmet.

Welding helmets are used by professional welders to protect their eyes, face and neck from sparks, ultraviolet light, infrared light, and the extreme heat produced during welding. Welding helmets can enable one to prevent arc eye, a painful condition where the cornea of the affected person is inflamed. Welding helmets are also helpful in preventing cases of retina burns, which can lead to a loss of vision in the affected person.

All welding helmets have a window covered with a filter called a lens shade, through which the welder can actually see while he is at work without exposing his eyes and face to any danger. Earlier, welding helmets used to have the window made of tinted glass, tinted plastic, and even a variable-density filter made from a pair of polarized lenses.

Modern welding helmets are sturdier and safer and typically have an electronic LCD shutter that darkens automatically when exposed to the bright welding arc. This enables the welder to see while working under normal ambient light even while wearing the welding helmet. All welding helmets are made of material that are resistant to extreme heat so that the wearer is absolutely safe.
